The Vibe: Chakrabongse Villas is a fascinating 19th century royal property turned boutique hotel that features a beautifully restored colonial house surrounded by lush gardens, as well as a traditional Thai house complete with a spacious riverside terrace. They offer the ultimate in private dining with only two tables in their idyllic waterfront restaurant where you can enjoy the sublime pleasure of their authentic Thai cuisine and personalized service. Tranquil and secluded, the restaurant is an ornately decorated riverside pavilion sitting on a private dock It gives you unparalleled access to the hypnotic rhythms of the Chao Praya River and unobstructed views of Wat Arun. Chakrabongse Villas is suitable for corporate events, weddings and special occasions.
What To Eat: The menu features royal Thai cuisine made with the freshest ingredients that the chef procures from the local market on a daily basis. You can dine from a set menu that changes daily and choose either the vegetarian or non-vegetarian option. We opted for the Non-Vegetarian menu. It began with a piping hot Shrimp Wrapped in Crispy Pastry which was served with a sweet chili sauce. Next was the Sweet Minced Pickle & Peanut Bal stuffed with fresh fruit, the Vegetarian Steamed Dumplings and the aromatic Grilled Prawn w/Lemongrass. Each appetizer had its own distinct texture and flavor and was tantalizing to the taste buds. The Spicy Mussel Salad was light and refreshing with hot, sour, and spicy elements that where well matched with the plump and succulent mussels. The Tom Yum Goong was an exceptional version, as the complex broth was permeated by the intense flavor of shrimp and bursting with hearty chunks of vegetables and seafood. A surprisingly satisfying dish was the Chicken Curry w/ Cucumber relish. The rich and creamy curry had just the right amount of spice and the high quality cuts of chicken where marvelously tender. Another excellent offering was the Deep Fried Red Tilapia w/ Red Sweet Sauce. The delicate fish was completely boneless and the sauce was nicely balanced between acidic and sweet elements. The Stir Fried Tender Green Shoots was another deceptively simple dish that was perfectly executed. For dessert we enjoyed the popular Mango w/ Sticky Rice and Fresh Seasonal Fruit of grapes, pineapple, cantaloupe, papaya and watermelon.
Inside Insights: Chakrabongse Villas defies expectations by offering the ultimate in private dining. There is nothing quite like the experience of having the restaurant basically to yourself and it is the perfect way to relax and recharge in style. The "Rawfully Food Menu" was recently introduced for guests and this exclusive dining experience is available in the evenings for dinner only (except Mondays) and reservations need to be made at least 48-72 hours in advance. This is the type of place you want to go when you want to really impress someone and go out of your way to make them feel special. You will also find their set menus are reasonably priced at under 2500 baht per person. It is a city restaurant, but the location makes it feel worlds away and they get extra points for the service and the romance factor.
