The Vibe: Located in the luxurious Sukhothai Hotel, Celadon is one of Bangkok's most distinguished upscale Thai restaurants. They are known for serving authentic Thai cuisine that is artistically plated. It is an elegant venue with a creamy white and beige color scheme, breathtakingly beautiful flower arrangements and centerpiece, and classic Thai art on the walls. You can dine in one of their air-conditioned salas and take in the view of the lotus-pond that surrounds the restaurant. They also have an open-air terrace and a protected herb garden for alfresco dining. Celadon has a romantic vibe and is tailor-made for special occasion dining and business meetings where you want to impress.
What To Eat: You can order ala carte or choose from a selection of set menus. On our visit we elected to treat ourselves to the 16-Course Puong Compu Menu. This is a sophisticated and cohesive menu of classic Thai dishes that have been masterfully crafted. The meal begins with an intricate sampling of traditional Thai appetizers. The Steamed Flower Shaped Dumplings w/ Minced Chicken are sublime, and contrast nicely with the Steamed Crab Claw w/ Fresh Garden Herbs. Another delightful dish is the texturally complex Wok Fried Hokkaido Scallop w/ Aromatic Herbs in Crispy Pandan Coconut Cone. The salad course is a traditional Som Tum which is elevated by the addition of buttery cashew nuts instead of peanuts. Next is NZ Green Lipped Mussels that have been marinated in red curry paste, sugar, soy and Thai herbs then skewered on lemon grass stalks and grilled over coals. The Tom Yam Goong is stellar as it is bursting with all the telltale signs of a luxurious master stock. The Thai Red Curry w/ Phuket Lobster is the next masterpiece, as the spicy, creamy curry enhances the natural sweetness of the lobster. The next serving is Steamed Snowfish w/ Lemon, Chilies & Ginger Sauce and the Grilled Jumbo Squid w/ Seafood Sauce. Both are perfectly executed and leave you marveling at how something so simple can taste so good. The best is saved for last and the Wok Fried Hokkaido Scallops, Green Asparagus, Shitake Mushroom w/ Soya Sauce and the Wok Fried Wagyu Beef in Hot Basil Sauce are legendary. The scallop dish is a feast for the eyes as giant seared scallops swim in a delicate sauce and the wagyu beef dish can only be described as a carnivores dream. Succulent 7 marble-grade wagyu beef literally melts in your mouth as it is joyfully married to aromatic basil and fiery chilies. It’s like no other version of this dish you will ever try and single-handedly makes this menu worth ordering. The meal ends with several traditional Thai desserts such as a delectable homemade Coconut Ice Cream and an intriguing Pandan Rice Pudding that is as delightful to look at as it is to eat.
Insider Insights: Celadon is first class cuisine, service and ambiance. It is never too crowded and it is the type of place you go to when you want to make a big impression. This is an expensive night out even if you get the ala carte menu, and you can expect to easily spend 2500 Baht to 3000 Baht a person on food and wine. It’s the cost of the wine that really gets you with the average glass being priced about 450 Baht. But if you feel like splurging, this is a great spot, and the food is worth the high price tag.
