The Vibe: Shunnomai is an exceptional Japanese buffet located at Gateway Mall in Ekamai. They feature a "viewable" kitchen where you can see the team of chefs prepare the food in the sushi section, the teppanyaki section and on their grill where they pride themselves on using only Binchō-tan (white charcoal) imported from Japan. On the surface this is a typical mall chain restaurant, but the quality is very good as it is Japanese owned and operated. Shunnomai is casual and perfect for families, and should appeal to anybody who appreciates Japanese food.
What to Eat: They have two reasonable buffet menus priced at 680Baht++ and 540Baht++ which include a choice of grilled (Sumibi Yaki) , fried (Agemon) and sashimi & sushi items, in addition to an ala carte menu, a seasonal menu that changes four times a year, and a set lunch menu available on weekdays. The buffet includes soup, salad bar, non-alcoholic drinks, and desserts The quality of the food exceeds expectations, and we recommend the Cocktail Sushi which is an original fried rice and sushi dish served in a martini glass, the Hamachi Sashimi and any of the sashimi and sushi combo plates which are surprisingly high grade cuts of fish. Another popular dish is the Okonomi-Yaki which is their famous Japanese omelet and you don't want to miss the Grilled Fish Cheek of Yellow Tail Tuna which is superb. It is enormous in size while being very juicy and succulent. Be sure to try the Katsu of breaded meat, fish and veggies and the traditional Tempura which is crispy and hot as it is made fresh to order. Other highlights include the tender Grilled Squid, and the Chicken Yakatori, which is cooked so that it tender and moist and amazingly devoid of the excess fat and skin that you commonly find. We also recommend the Tori Liver Kushi which is grilled chicken livers in a sweet teriyaki sauce. For dessert try the Matcha Green Tea Ice Cream and the homemade Mochi.
Insider Insights: Shunnomai is the perfect venue for high quality Japanese cuisine that won't break the bank. It is great for either lunch or dinner. If you want something light you can just order the "Salad & Dessert" bar for only 290Baht++ and if you like to drink alcoholic beverages you can opt to spend an additional 450Baht net and get 90 minutes of free flow beer (including Asahi) Sake and cocktails. One drawback is that they do have a time limit on the buffet, but it's a minor detail. Without a doubt Shunomai is one of your best bets for a wide variety of high quality Japanese food that is affordable and made fresh to order.
