Vibe: Adhere 13th Blues Bar is the real deal when it comes to authentic rhythm and blues. Located opposite Samsen soi 2 near Khao San, this unassuming venue offers much more than expected upon first glance. This is the kind of place you come to listen to "toe tapping, head bobbing, thigh slapping" music that genuinely reaches in, grabs a hold of you, and gets you out of your seat. Opened in 2000, Adhere is family owned by Pong who is a Thai blues musician and has a easy going, all inclusive "come as you" are vibe. They only have six small tables inside and limited seating at the bar and outside on the patio. Adhere draws an unusually eclectic crowd and it transcends the barriers that usually divide people along the lines of age, race, socio-economic status and gender.
What to Eat & Drink: One of the highlights of Adhere is their low prices. Cocktails and mixed drinks range between 130Baht to 160Baht and you can buy cheap Thai whisky by the small or large bottle, while beer is priced at 80Baht. The cocktails are strong and go down easy and they offer a slew of signature cocktails which combine a sometimes perplexing combination of alcoholic beverages that seems to have been selected for its ability to get you blitzed quickly. They have a very small menu of tasty Thai & International bar food , and a wonderful smelling grill on the patio where the owners girlfriend cooks and sells chicken and pork. We recommend the finger licking BBQ Ribs, which are messy but have a spicy and tangy sauce, and the thoroughly addictive Spring Rolls, which are flavorful and crispy and reminiscent of really great street food.
Insider Insights: Guests are invited to bring their instruments and jam with the band "open mic" style. You never know who will be playing; the owner Pong invites his international musician friends as well as local blues bands to perform. The only way to get a schedule; however, is to stop by the chalkboard outside or to call ahead. Don't expect to find karaoke or cover bands here. The music is fresh, original, and reminiscent of the classic "jam session". The house band has a unique talent at blending traditional Thai folk music and blues into a seamless musical experience that sounds like it shouldn't work, but unexpectedly does. Adhere is a bit grungy and gritty, but it's all a part of its charm. It has a clean onsite unisex restroom and we were impressed on our visit with their super friendly and professional service, which is far better than we find at most upscale venues. You never need to ask for refills, and food is delivered quickly and plates are cleared away promptly. Open daily from 6:00PM to midnight, this humble establishment reveals itself to be a temple to gritty and soulful blues that leaves you feeling like you've discovered something quite special.
