The Venue

Spanish on 4 is the second Spanish restaurant in Thailand opened by owner Guy Jackson; who originally opened up Tapas Café on Sukhumvit in 2006 and most recently launched a new branch Tapas Café Hua Hin in Dec 2010. Spanish on 4 specializes in authentic Spanish Tapas and regional Spanish cuisine with a menu designed by Chef Xavier Palomar who originally hails from Barcelona, Spain. Decorated with an orange and yellow color palate, the restaurant uses contrasting textures of soft warm wood, sleek and smooth gray concrete, black marble, and colorful modern custom art pieces and murals to create an overall atmosphere that is laid back yet somehow inviting and sophisticated. The venue is spread out over four levels in which they have created several distinct and stylized dining areas. Outside on the ground level there is seating for 22 and the area beckons anyone outside to stop by and take a siesta and enjoy eating some Tapas al–fresco while sipping on cool and refreshing homemade Sangria (100Baht) or an imported San Miguel (90Baht) beer. Inside on the first floor, there is seating for 30 and the hip bar area with an open kitchen and easy access to the wine cooler which excusivly offers only wines imported from Spain. Wine can be ordered by the bottle or by the glass for 130Baht-220Baht. The second level is the cozy main dining area with seating for 60. Spanish on 4 also just completed a party room with a dance floor and small dining area on the third floor and a rooftop bar and dining area that can be reserved for groups, private parties, and corporate events.

The Food

Spanish on 4 has a full menu of Spanish cuisine and a rotation of weekly specials that are well worth trying; however, it is the Tapas that are the real show stoppers. Every item tasted on the menu was delectable, and the freshness and quality of the ingredients was apparent from the first bite to the last. Favorite Tapas are the Gambas al Ajillo (130Baht) which are prawns served in a sizzling dish and swimming in olive oil, chilies and fresh garlic. The Chaperones Plancha (150Baht) which is a fork tender baby grilled squid dish served with olive oil, salt and fresh lemon was also a winner. Additional must try Tapas are the world famous Jamon Serrano (150Baht-290Baht) which is a rich, yet delicate, dry cured ham imported from Spain, and the Boquerones en Vinagre (225Baht) which are imported white anchovies marinated in wine vinegar, olive oil and garlic. They are the antithesis of what comes to mind when one thinks of anchovies; neither salty nor fishy, they are simply a marvel. Another unique dish is the Piquillos con Bacalao (195Baht) which are sweet roasted red bell peppers that are stuffed with a creamy salted cod, white wine, and an onion and garlic mixture. Vegetarians would enjoy the Ensalada Verde con Gratinado Cabra y Pimiento Rojo (150Baht) which is nice green salad served with large portions of delightfully gooey goats’ cheese which has been melted over bread and served with red bell peppers and a balsamic reduction. The Tortilla de Patatas (100Baht) is another hefty sized vegetarian dish that is a potato and onion omelet; which is a bit like a frittata, but it is much lighter than expected. We also recommend the Patatas Bravas (90Baht) which are fried potatoes with a sweet and spicy tomato sauce and an addictive garlic aioli. It is easy to delight in this food because of it’s simple, complimentary elements that are expertly prepared in a way that enhances the food without masking the natural flavors.

Spanish on 4 also has fantastic weekly promotions such as 6 different lunch sets that let you try 3 different Tapas dishes for 220Baht++ and daily specials listed below:

The Verdict

If you’re looking for great food, fantastic service, reasonable prices and a destination dining spot where you can go and stay for hours, then you have got to visit Spanish on 4. The caliber of the food is reason enough to visit Spanish on 4 , but the great location and easy access to BTS, the fantastic selection of imported Spanish wines and beer, modern and artistic design aesthetic and the relaxing atmosphere are what propels this establishment to the head of the pack. There really is nothing to lose and everything to gain by visiting Spanish on 4 in Silom.
